When one thinks of a wagon most think of a homely looking green Subaru Forrester or God forbid a Volvo 240 wagon. In a world full of SUVs and most recently performance crossovers, we need more wagons. There is nothing inherently sporty about a 4500 pound crossover even if you slap a ST badge on it (we are looking at you Ford.) If you compare a Mercedes GLC 63 AMG to a E63 AMG wagon they have a similar drivetrain sporting the standard twin turbo 4.0 liter V-8 and both have all wheel drive. From an aesthetic standpoint it could be argued either way but from a performance standpoint things start looking a little different. The wagon will always have a lower center of gravity which drastically affects the handling characteristics. When looking at weight the GLC actually beats the E class wagon by a little over one hundred pounds. Is this surprising? Somewhat. Do the regular consumers care? Absolutely not. Taking a step back from the case of the Mercedes, crossovers sell because of ease of entry and effective marketing departments. To any enthusiast, sporty crossovers is a oxymoron. To the the soccer mom with a large pocket book and a hankering for speed and status, a sporty crossover makes all the sense in the world.
